Gary M. Small

Mr. Small was named President and CEO of UCFC and Home Savings in March 2014, bringing more than 28 years of industry experience and a successful record of developing businesses, growing revenue and improving organizational performance. Small most recently served as Senior Executive Vice President – Chief Banking Officer for S&T Bank in Indiana, Pennsylvania, with responsibility for their Wealth Management, Retail Banking and Insurance business groups. Prior to joining S&T, Small worked for Jackson Hewitt Tax Services, initially serving as Chief Operating Officer for its nationwide, 1,000 store company owned business unit. Before Jackson Hewitt, Mr. Small was with Sky Financial Group, serving as its Executive Vice President - Head of Regional Banking, and subsequent to its merger with Huntington Bank, Small served as Huntington Bank’s Executive Vice President – Regional Banking Group President. Prior to joining Sky Financial, Small spent 20 years with National City Corporation, and a predecessor, Merchants National Corporation, in a number of senior operating and financial roles, including four years as an Executive Vice President – Retail Network Executive, with responsibility for over 200 branch locations across the Midwest.

Zahid Afzal was named Chief Operating Officer at Home Savings Bank in March 2018. Prior to joining Home Savings, Afzal served as EVP, Chief Technology and Operations Executive at Capital Bank in Raleigh, N.C. Afzal has also held executive positions with Huntington National Bank and Bank of America. He was appointed to the United Community Financial Corp (UCFC) Board of Directors in 2013. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Bancsource in Springfield, MO. In the past, he has served as Board Member of Bowling Green State University College of Business, the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC) and Groundwork Group. He is a Graduate of The Ohio State University Fisher Business College Executive Leadership Program, Columbus, OH and Duke University Fuqua Business College Executive Leadership Program, Durham, NC. Afzal earned a Bachelor-of-Science degree and completed post-graduate coursework in Management Information Systems at Strayer University, Washington D.C.

Timothy W. Esson

Timothy (Tim) Esson was appointed Chief Financial Officer of United Community Financial Corp. (UCFC) in February, 2015. He also serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Home Savings, positions held since March 2011. Esson joined the company in 2003 and has served as Principal Accounting Officer and Treasurer as well as Vice President of Finance of Home Savings.

Matthew T. Garrity

Matthew (Matt) Garrity has been Executive Vice President with responsibility for Commercial Lending, Mortgage Lending and Credit Administration of Home Savings since 2013. Prior to that, he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Credit Officer, having joined the company in 2009. Before joining Home Savings, Garrity served as Senior Vice President at National City from 2005 – 2007 managing Capital Markets Investment Banking, serving as Deputy Chief Credit Officer and Senior Portfolio Manager in the Cleveland, Ohio market.

Jason Gendics

Jason Gendics joined Home Savings in 2019 as Executive Vice President, Consumer and Small Business Banking. He is responsible for management, planning and oversight of consumer branch and small business sales in addition to oversight of Treasury Management and Government Banking sales and service. He has over 25 years of very successful banking experience, leadership and innovation with large regional banks. Before joining Home Savings, he held management positions at Huntington National Bank, FirstMerit Corporation, and National City Bank. Mr. Gendics earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Economics from Brown University in Providence Rhode Island and Master of Business Administration in International Management from Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Ohio.

Jude J. Nohra

Jude Nohra is currently Executive Vice President—Corporate Governance, General Counsel and Secretary of Home Savings and has been General Counsel and Secretary of the Company since June 2004. Before joining the Company, he served as an associate attorney for Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, L.L.P. (now known as Squire Patton Boggs) for approximately five years. Prior to joining Squire, Sanders and Dempsey, Nohra served for two years as a judicial law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

Mr. Altman is a co-managing partner of the Altman Company, a full service real estate development firm for commercial, multi-family, office, medical and hotel properties located in multiple states. Mr. Altman has over 25 years of experience in managing, developing and financing commercial real estate ventures. Mr. Altman is the past Chairman of the Board at Premier Bank and Trust before Premier’s sale to Home Savings Bank. Prior to Mr. Altman’s involvement with Premier Bank, he served on the Sky Bank Board as a Regional Director in the Western Reserve Region as well as a Director on the Sky Bank Board of Directors. Mr. Altman graduated from The Ohio State University School of Business.

Mr. Schiraldi is a Certified Public Accountant and has been a partner at Cohen & Company, Certified Public Accountants, Youngstown, Ohio, since 1990. Mr. Schiraldi served as Director of Tax Operations at Cohen from 1983 until 2003. Mr. Schiraldi also serves as Chairman of the Board for Home Savings Bank.

Mr. Adams has over 30 years of small and large bank management experience. Prior to forming his own company Marty Adams Consulting, LLC, where he serves as both an advisor to banks and their boards of directors and to private equity firms pertaining to bank equity investments, Mr. Adams served as interim chief executive officer of PVF Capital Corp. and Park View Federal Savings Bank, Solon, Ohio before joining their boards of directors. He also served as president and chief operating officer of Huntington Bancshares Inc. following Huntington's acquisition of Sky Financial Group, Inc. in July 2007 until December 2007. Under his leadership, Adams built Sky Financial, and its predecessor Citizens Bancshares, Inc., from a small Ohio community bank into an $18 billion diversified financial holding company, with locations throughout the Midwest. Mr. Adams has served on both boards since February 2013.

Mr. Bevack retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of United Community Financial Corp. and Home Savings on March 31, 2014. Mr. Bevack, who joined Home Savings in 2000, was named President and Chief Executive Officer of the Bank in 2009 and UCFC in 2011. Prior to his appointment of CEO and President, Mr. Bevack held the positions of Chief Operating Officer, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President of Mortgage Lending at Home Savings. He also is a Certified Public Accountant (currently inactive). Before joining Home Savings, Mr. Bevack served as Executive Vice President and Assistant Secretary at Metropolitan Bank & Trust and held various executive positions with other regional financial institutions, and brings over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry to UCFC.

Mr. Burdman is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Redstone Investments. Redstone is a development, management and acquisitions company focusing on shopping center development headquartered in Youngstown, Ohio. Mr. Burdman has been involved in the real estate business for more than 25 years, and he serves on the Boards of Directors of Simco Management Corp. and Cardinal Commerce Corporation. His extensive experience started with Burdman Brothers Companies (a family-held real estate development firm based out of Youngstown, Ohio). Mr. Burdman also serves as a Director of Home Savings Bank.

Mr. Crewson retired from BP in 2008, after having served the company over 27 years in a variety of executive level positions, including most recently that of Deputy Director, Business Development in London England. He joined the UCFC and Home Savings Boards of Directors in 2009.

The Honorable Scott D. Hunter

Judge Hunter currently serves as a Mahoning County Area Court Judge, Judge of the Mahoning County Misdemeanor Drug Court, managing member of Hunter-Stevens Land Title Agency, LTD and maintains a private law practice. He previously served as associate and partner of the Davis & Davis Law Firm. He joined the UCFC and Home Savings Boards of Directors in 2009.

Mrs. Tressel brings her long tradition of community involvement to the Home Savings and UCFC Boards. As an active board member for many charitable organizations over the years, she possesses the critical leadership capabilities needed for this appointment. Combined with her role as the First Lady of Youngstown State University, Mrs. Tressel’s experience provides an opportunity for her to apply her talents as an active Board member. Mrs. Tressel also adds 14 years of experience in the financial services industry to the Boards of Home Savings and UCFC.
