Real Food, High Quality Ingredients

Affordable meals should also include real, high-quality ingredients. For us, real ingredients mean no colors, flavors, or preservatives from artificial sources. That’s why our brands are working to remove ingredients from artificial sources from our food menus.

In the past year, Burger King has made substantial changes to its menu to embrace and promote 100% real food, which will increasingly become part of our core marketing approach for guests. In the US, 85% of the Burger King permanent food menu is now free of colors, flavors, and preservatives from artificial sources, and we are striving to achieve 100% by 2020. Burger King US has already removed colors and flavors from artificial sources from all permanent menu beef and chicken sandwiches, and all permanent menu chicken products have no added MSG.

We are also working to improve the ingredients in the food we serve to our guests around the world. Burger King has launched the 100% real whopper sandwich in Sweden, with several markets including Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland planned to launch by the end of 2019. Additionally, the Popeyes brand has recently launched in Spain with chicken locally sourced from Spain that is prepared with fresh chicken that is marinated for 12 hours.

Ingredient Policies

Going beyond standard regulatory compliance, our brands are in the process of expanding their ingredient and nutrition policies with specific requirements of mandatory compliancy for suppliers of those brands. In addition to these brand specific ingredient and nutrition policies, Restaurant Brands International follows these global requirements:

Partially Hydrogenated Fats

All Burger King, Tim Hortons, and Popeyes products must be free of partially hydrogenated oils. Globally, cooking oil and ingredients must be designated as trans-fat free or containing zero trans-fat, as applicable per local or national legislation.

As part of our commitment to safe ingredients, our product specifications require that all approved plastic toys and promotional drink wear not contain bisphenol A ("BPAs"), and prohibit the use of perfluorooctanoic acid ("PFOAs") within our approved paper and packaging products.
